An Investigation of Needs for Parish Nurse Program

Parish nursing is an emerging nursing care delivery model that practices holistic health care. Parish nurses provide care to a faith community, emphasizing the relationship between faith and health. Parish nurses identify five major roles in their professional practice : Counseling, teaching, advocacy, community resource liaison, and volunteer coordination.
The authors conducted a need assessment with 370 congregation members to identify health service needs, personal health status and concerns. The results of this study are to be used as a foundation for developing parish nurse program. The findings are as follows :
1. Ninety percent of the respondents wanted to implement the parish nurse program in their congregation.
2. About two-thirds of respondents indicated that they wanted to receive services such as, personal health counseling, health education, regular checkups, and home visits for the sick. However, maternal and child health care services are not a priority.
3. A fifth of respondents reported that they had health problems. Among them, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and GI problems were the most frequently reported.
4. About 40 % of respondents indicated that they would participate in volunteer works.
Conclusion : The specific needs of parish nurse programs vary from congregation to congregation. Each congregation has to structure the program as best suits its needs. Thus the parish nurse must continually be looking and listening for needs in the congregation. The authors believe that the parish nurse program in a congregational setting could provide another way of nursing service to the people.
